It is a remarkable coincidence that during the observance of Biju Patnaik memorial day, the Women’s Reservation Bill is being introduced in Parliament. In fact, during the 1990s, he played a pioneering role in women’s empowerment in India. Biju Janata Dal has always believed strongly in empowering women, and therefore fully supports the Women’s Reservation Bill. Biju Patnaik was vast like the sky, tolerant like the soil, and towering like the Himalayas. But as you know, in Odisha politics, some people always take pleasure in betrayal. They should remember that no mask can hide their sins forever. People know very well who is who. Everyone knows that Odisha has continuously suffered historic neglect from successive Central Governments. Now, the Delimitation Bill has created a major question mark over the political identity of the Odia people. Odia pride is in danger today. The time has come for all of us to unite and fight for our beloved Odisha. I had written a letter to the Hon’ble Chief Minister requesting that a special session of the Assembly be convened within 48 hours and that a resolution be passed to protect Odisha’s political interests regarding the Delimitation Bill. But it seems the Odisha Government prefers to remain a silent spectator and is more interested in protecting the interests of Bharatiya Janata Party than safeguarding the interests of Odisha and the Odia people. Is this what is called Odia identity? I have appealed to all Members of Parliament from Odisha, irrespective of party lines, to raise this issue strongly. If we do not unite and fight at this crucial moment, history will never forgive us. Biju Patnaik was the symbol of Odia pride. On his memorial day today, our united struggle to protect the interests of Odisha will be the finest tribute to him.
